The USDA has announced the opening of the application period for its Community Food Projects Competitive Grants Program, established in 1996 to increase the self-reliance of communities in providing for their food needs, promoting comprehensive responses to local food, nutrition, and farm issues, and assisting low-income individuals by providing greater access to fresh food supplies. Awards ranging from $10,000 to $30,000 and for up to 3 years are available to private, nonprofit organizations that:
- Develop relationships between two or more food system sectors;
- Meet the agricultural needs of a state or neighborhood, developing and improving infrastructure;
- Support entreprenueral project development;
- Plan for and build long-term solutions to the capacity of communities to address agricultural problems; and
- Create marketing activities that are mutually beneficial for producers and consumers, and are innovative
