Foundation Center has announced three grant opportunities that we’d like to share with our readers today. The first, from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, comes from their Forward Promise Innovation Grants: Promoting Opportunities for the Health and Success of Young Men of Color, intended to “identify and support innovative programs that address the challenges facing young men of color that corresponds with RWJF’s areas of interest; have potential to change the organization and system(s) of service delivery; be poised for growth and/or replication; and demonstrate the potential to transform social norms within the context of schools and/or communities.” A maximum of 10 grants of up to $500,000 will be awarded for periods of up to 30 months, and will be awarded to projects with evidence of impact in the following 4 areas:
- Alternative approaches to discipline that do not push students out of school;
- Dropout prevention and increasing middle school retention and high school graduation rates;
- Mental health interventions tailored to boys and young men who have been exposed to or have experienced trauma and violence; or
- Career training programs blending foci on education and workforce to ensure college- and career ready students.
Preference will be given to organizations that are public entities or 501(c)(3) tax-exempt and not Type III supporting organizations or private foundations. The deadline for the proposals is October 10, but a Web conference call regarding the opportunity will be held on September 11. See the webpage for application materials and other information.
The second grant comes from Youth Service America in partnership with UnitedHealthcare. UnitedHealth HEROES grants of up to $1,000 are being offered to community-based nonprofits and schools to launch youth-led service-learning projects aimed at combating childhood obesity through walking, hiking, or running. Each project will begin on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (January 21, 2013) and end on Global Youth Service Day (April 26 through 28, 2013). The online application period will begin September 4 of this year and close on October 15, and webinars will be held to help applicants through this process. The third grant comes from the nonprofit network LeadingAge. Grants totaling $100,000 have been announced through the organization’s Innovations Fund, in increments of up to $25,000 for the first year, with multi-year proposals to be considered for projects addressing the need for housing and services offered together for low-income elders. Successful proposals will address one of the following aspects of housing with services:
- Assessment (development and implementation of tools, development of service plans)
- Health and Wellness Programming (promotion activities, self-care and chronic care management, transitional care and health education)
- Partnerships with Service Providers (co-location of services, development of collaborations community health and social service agencies)
- Workforce training (service coordinator and property manager training linking housing and services)
- Technology (assistive devices, retrofitting, home modification, telehealth, and wireless communication)
Applications are due on or before October 30, 2012, but priority will be given to applications submitted by September 30, 2012. More information and application requirements can be found on LeadingAge’s website.
